When you are planning to apply for a contractor license in the state of Virginia, there are a few things you should know. What is a contractor?

The term “Contractor” defines a person that for a fixed price, fee, commission or percentage accepts, orders, contracts or bids upon a part or the entire project of construction, renovation, improvement or repair of a building or structure annexed to a property owned or leased by any person, including him.

For those who do not understand the monetary limits between these licenses, here is all the information they need to understand what is the license they need to apply for.

Monetary limits for Class A contractors

Contractors that have a Class A license can manage a construction, repair or removal that is totally valued in a single project at $120,000 or more, or the total value of the project undertaken by such a person within a year is $750,000 or more.

Monetary limits for Class B contractors

Contractors that have this type of licenses can manage a removal, repair or construction project valued over $10,000, but no more than $120,000 of the total value of the project. Furthermore, the total value of all improvements undertaken by the contractor within a year should be over $150,000, but not exceed $750,000.

Monetary limits for Class C contractors

The total value referred to in a single contract to this contractor is over $1,000 but no more than $10,000 of the total value of the construction. The total value of all such repairs undertaken by the contractor over the course of 12 months will not exceed $150,000.

No matter what type of license one might apply for, the common requirement is to be over 18 years only and to have followed the exam preparation course for each type of license. Of course, each license type has its own individual requirements that need to be followed in order for a person to become a contractor.

Are there any temporary contractor licenses firms can file for?

Firms that file for a temporary license will need to meet all the legal requirements found in the Code of Virginia and submit the completed application for this license. Furthermore, firms will need to have a comparable good standing license in another state to prove that they are certified to work in this field. Other aspects that firms should know when applying for a temporary license are:

  • temporary licenses cannot be renewed;
  • a firm cannot receive more than one temporary license;
  • the issuance of a permanent license will void the temporary one;
  • if the board does not approve a license application, the temporary one also ceases to be valid.
