You have been working as a security officer for some time now and you are thinking about starting your own business. Good for you. However, you should know that setting up a security business in the UK is far from being easy. You will need more than a nice sum of money. What you need is basic business knowledge and clients. It may not be easy, but neither is it impossible. Here are some guidelines on what you need to do when establishing your own security business.

Get licensing ready

If you don’t have SIA licensing, then you have to get it. People want SIA licensed security and you can’t afford to disappoint them. SIA stands for the Security Industry Authority. It regulates the private security industry in the UK. The SIA license is required for every security job and it is compulsory. But how do you get the license on its way? You send an application file and the Security Industry Authority will notify you if you qualify.

If you yourself do not engage in any kind of activity, apply for a non-frontline license. With this license, you will be able to manage and supervise your employees. As a business owner, it is necessary to make sure that your staff members are licensed with SIA too. You don’t want to have trouble with the authorities. What you want is to grow a business.

Choose a name and a location

Establishing your name and location is very important. If you haven’t yet thought of a name for your security business, it is time you did. Choose a name that people are likely to remember. Don’t include your name because it will denote unprofessionalism. What you can do instead of include the word “national”. Concerning the location, you have to be as close to clients as possible. You don’t want to be somewhere where clients can’t find you. If you have a limited budget, you can start with a virtual office.

Find sources of financing

Financing is the building block of your security business, so you need to find sources of financing. If you have enough money, you will be able to get the office space that you want, train your employees, and buy much-needed hardware. If you don’t already know this, financing a business is a challenge. What can you do? Well, you can get a bank loan or to attract an investor. Sure, there are other options you can explore, like credit card financing.

Work on your people skills

In the security industry, you have direct contact with people. This is the reason why you and your staff members should work on your people skills. As a business owner, you have to learn how to deal with your personnel. But what about your personnel? Your employees have to learn the proper way of behaving with clients. It is a good idea to have your personnel psychologically tested. The last thing you want is to hear clients complaining about them.
